Believe it or not, a lot of people have questions about changing a disposable furnace filter. It’s important to do this often. It helps you maintain the air quality in your home, affects the health of your family, and has a direct impact on your HVAC system and its efficiency.
We recommend for filters to be changed once per month. It’s a good idea to set a reminder on your phone or write it down on your calendar so you don’t forget.
Now for the fun part- exactly how to change your furnace filter!
First, make sure you know where your filter is located. They usually are located near a furnace, your air handler, and cabinet. If you are having trouble locating your filter, give us a call and we can help you. It’s possible you can damage your equipment if you are unsure and digging around in ductwork or near your air handler.
Second, find out what size your filter needs to be. If you already have a filter in place, it’s often on the outside border of the filter. If not, you can measure the opening. It’s a good idea to take a big piece of paper and trace around the opening. This way you can take it to the store with you for reference. Place the intended filter upon your reference drawing and see if it fits. If so, you’re in business! Decide what level of filtration you’d like to have. This influences how much dirt, allergens, animal hair, and other contaminants are filtered out of your air through the filter.
Third, it’s time to put your new filter in place. Pay close attention to the direction of the arrow on the filter. The arrow should point towards your air handler or furnace. This indicates the direction of airflow. Keep in mind that the air is taken IN through the filter, and goes OUT through your registers.
