While the first day of Winter doesn't officially roll around until December, we like to be prepared for the days ahead.
Temps are starting to get lower and the days are shorter, meaning that our furnaces will be flipped on before we know it.
The holidays are right around the corner, which means that we all like to try to save money where we can.
These tips should help you save some money and that you're ready for those cold winter temps!
1. Make sure you change your filter at least once per month.
-This makes sure your furnace is getting proper air flow and also means the air quality in your home is better.
2. Check for air leaks throughout your home.
-Use caulk or weather-stripping to seal any leaks you find in duct work or around windows and doors.
3. Clear away snow and debris from your outdoor furnace vent.
-Make sure your HVAC system is able to properly vent furnace byproducts (like carbon monoxide). You can locate these by following your furnace exhaust pipes (usually PVC) to their exterior vent. Also, remember that generators have exhaust vents that need to vent harmful byproducts!
4. Keep your thermostat at a reasonable temperature.
-Did you know that the US Department of Energy suggests that you keep your thermostat at 68 degrees in the winter? If this is too cold for you, find a temperature you're comfortable with and try not to adjust too much. This might seem obvious, but the warmer you set your temperature, the more energy/money you will spend.
5. Schedule an HVAC Maintenance Visit.
-Furnace manufacturers recommend that you have your HVAC system serviced twice per year- in the spring and in the fall. These routine maintenance visits are important to make sure that you are getting the best performance possible out of your system. A certified professional will clean, inspect, & test your system. This means you will get the most out of your system and it will perform to the best of its ability- meaning maximum efficiency & cost savings.
