Change your filter
Yes, we say this constantly. But that is because it’s one of the easiest and most important ways to take care of your HVAC system! Did you know that just changing your filter can reduce your energy usage by up to 15% every month? Find a way to remind yourself to take care of your filter every month.
If you have a temporary filter, save money by buying your filters in larger quantities. That will not only save you money, but also give you filters on-hand, increasing the likelihood that you will remember to change it. Set a reminder on your phone or do it on the same day every month – create a habit out of it!If you have a permanent filter, remember to clean it every month. This is especially important in the summer and winter months when your HVAC system is working the hardest, but it’s a good habit to keep all year long. Just like with temporary filters, set a reminder for yourself so you remember to clean it!Don’t forget that the harder your system has to work, the shorter its lifespan. Make sure you get your money’s worth out of your system by taking care of the maintenance it needs – like changing your filter!
Keep your outside unit free of debris
It’s a good idea to check your outdoor unit 2-3 times per month. Landscaping or other debris can collect around the unit, hindering its ability to cool down your home. There should be at least a 2 foot clearance of vegetation around your unit so that it has enough space to properly operate. It needs this much space to ensure it can bring in enough air to cool down your home. If you complete your own yard work, make it a habit to check it every time you mow or run the weedeater. You could also check it while watering flowers or taking out the trash. Find what works for you and stick to it!
Install a programmable thermostat
Are you still operating on a digital thermostat that only allows you to turn the system on and off and set one temperature? You could save a lot more money if you install a programmable thermostat. These thermostats can ensure your system is operating according to your habits, keeping your energy costs down.
Time to detail your bathroom fans
If it’s been a while since you’ve cleaned and detailed your bathroom fans, now’s the time! Those fans help keep humidity down in your home as well. Before diving into this task, make sure the power is off to the fans. If you’re short on time, use your vacuum hose to clear off any dust and debris. However if you have the time, remove the cover and clean with soap and water. While making sure the power is still off to the fan, use a toothbrush to clear off any dust that has collected on the fan blades. Vacuum or wipe up any that fell off of the fan, and replace the fan cover once it has been dried. Not only will this quick task increase your fan’s efficiency and prolong its operating life, it will also help reduce the humidity in your home.
Use ceiling fans to your advantage
Make sure your fans are rotating in a counter-clockwise direction in the hot summer months. This means that they are pushing airflow downward, creating a “wind chill” effect. This will help make occupants in the room feel cooler and more comfortable. Typically you can change the direction of your fan by a small switch on the side of the fan. Ensure the fan is not moving before changing directions.
Don’t forget to check and see that the fan blades are clean. If they are in need of a dusting, take care of that before turning the fan on so that you are not circulating dust and allergens throughout the room- and making a mess!
