Our homes are a constant source of work. Whether it’s landscaping, dishes, laundry, or dusting… it seems like we are caught in a never-ending cycle of household chores.
You do not need to add to the long list of duties, right? Surprisingly, your HVAC system could be adding to the dust in your home… but this can be a quick fix.
Changing The Filter In Your HVAC System Can Help Prevent Dust Build-up
If you find yourself in a constant fight with dust in your home, be sure to check your air filter. At minimum, your filter should be checked once per month. If you live in a home with pets or someone with allergies, it may be better to check and change your filter more often than once per month.
When you look at your air filter, look for a buildup of dust, dirt, and debris. All of the things captured in your air filter are things that have been taken out of the air in your home. YUCK, right? If the filter appears dirty or dusty, it’s time to change it. After all, you don’t want dust and debris recirculating throughout the air, do you?
Ensure you purchase a filter that fits properly. If you fail to do this, particles can escape the filtration and be recirculated into the air.
Leaky Ductwork Can Contribute To A Dusty Home
When you look at your vents and registers, you should not notice a build-up of dust on the openings.
When dust builds up at these openings, it usually indicates that you have leaky ductwork.
Leaks in duct work can be caused by poor installation, damages, or an aging system.
Some of these leaks you may be able to identify yourself. Turning on all the lights or using a spotlight or flashlight in the area of the duct work may help you identify where the air is leaking out. You will be able to see the dust coming out of the air leak.
Usually you can fix some of the duct work leaks yourself. You can use duct tape to seal the cracks.
If you want a more thorough inspection of your duct work completed, you can hire an HVAC technician to come out and perform a more in-depth review of your system.
They will be able to get into the more hard to reach places and fix any of the leaks in those areas.
Dry Air And Low Humidity Can Contribute To Dusty Conditions Within Your Home
You probably have noticed how when the air is warmer it seems thicker. In dry climates or winter months, the air is thinner.
Dust and allergens can travel more freely in thinner dry or winter air.
When the air is heavy with humidity (or moisture in the air), it makes it more difficult for dust and allergens to travel through your home’s environment.
A whole-home humidifier can help with creating an environment that will fight dust build-up in your home.
Additionally, a whole home humidifier will also help keep any wood furniture or flooring in your home in tip-top shape.
An HVAC service provider can help you discuss your options for a whole home humidifier.
